The story behind this song is both incredibly heart breaking and touching at the same time. Co-written with American songwriter Will Jennings, it was inspired by the pain and grief Eric had been through during a period of great tragedy in his life. On 20th March 1991 Eric’s then 4 year old son Conor was killed after falling from a 53rd floor window onto the roof of an adjacent building. What’s more tragic is that his manager, two roadies and fellow musician Stevie Ray Vaughan had been killed just 4 months earlier in a helicopter crash… As his lyrics say; “Time can bring you down, Time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, Have you begging please, begging please”. Eric used the emotions he suffered during this incredibly difficult period of his life to look for meaning in what happened and to produce some of his most brilliant and heartfelt music. This song helped form part of the healing process for him and proved that we can always find a way to move on from challenges and grow stronger.
