The Moment Anthony Robbins Became ‘Rich’

By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner at Lighthouse International

How often do you think about money?

Ever find yourself worrying about how much you “can” or “can’t” spend?

Sometimes it can feel like money has a vice-grip on our lives, our happiness and even our freedom. How do we escape the cycle and get that financial freedom we’ve been working hard for?

Anthony Robbins is one of America’s top life and business strategists. He has helped millions of people, including the likes of Bill Clinton, Princess Diana and Leonardo DiCaprio. At one point in his life, however, he had nothing, and felt that money had “terrorised” him. In the moving video below, he shares the moment he says he became rich…

“Just F******** Give!!!”

Anthony Robbins was at a point in his life where he had about $40 to his name, had let others borrow from him and had nothing coming through. He didn’t know how he was going to get through the month, get a new job opportunity or sustain himself. He had enough for maybe a few meals to last him, but not much else.

Perhaps you have had or are going through times like this, where you’re literally counting every penny you have and being water-tight with anything you spend. The last thing you want to do is give your money to others or find out you’ve got another bill to pay that you didn’t plan for!

The moment Mr Robbins became rich was not when he landed a big contract or became high-earning. It was a moment when he was desperately poor with no plan to get more money, that he decided to give his money to a little boy to treat his mum to a meal. He didn’t do it because it was “the right thing” to do or because he knew he would get something back by giving freely. He gave without knowing how he would make his money back. He gave because he felt absolutely compelled to.

We may say, “when I have enough money, then I’ll happily give to others, but right now, I need to make sure I’ve got enough for me.”

Give When You Don’t Have It

Real legends don’t hold onto their money out of fear. (The ones who do always end up losing it). If fear is driving you, whether it’s with money, relationships, work, or family, you’re going to burn out. It’s no coincidence that “scarcity” sounds a lot like “scare city”…

It may seem totally counter-intuitive to give money when you don’t have it – if you’re worried about how you’re going to get it back. But there is a natural, timeless law of nature – the Law of Giving and Receiving. It means that in order to receive, we must give first, and we must give with a sincere intention, or in other words, without trying to make sure you’ll get something in return. This has been a learning curve for me over the years and I know that we cannot truly receive anything more if we are already holding onto what we have. So if we want more money, more appreciation, more work – then we have to give it. As Mr Robbins says,

“The secret to living is giving. Do it when you don’t have it, and I promise you, scarcity will leave your life.”

Financial freedom doesn’t happen when you have loads of money (we’ve all heard of the lottery winners who lose it all and get into more debt!) but when you choose to free yourself from money by giving it when you need to, not when you want to.

Many of us have deeply embedded beliefs that we need to hold onto things like money and it can be very hard to let go of those beliefs - even if we really want to. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy in our efforts to make big changes like this. If you would value speaking to someone who has been through this journey and can help you make the same changes in your financial life, please let us know below...
