3 Tips From a Master Networker

By James Mills, Associate Partner, Lighthouse International

“The fundamental element that defines the quality of your life is the people you surround yourself with and the conversations you have with them.”

– Jon Levy

You may have heard expressions like, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” or indeed the Jim Rohn quote,

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Networks are critical to the success of any legend, yet if you don’t already know the right people it can seem like a struggle to build the relationships needed to get that dream job, raise funding for a business or having people around to help you in times of adversity.

In an excellent Business Insider article, networking expert; Jon Levy, explains how he built an influential network from scratch. This has enabled him to bring together a group of respected people from a range of industry sectors and professions, including Nobel laureates and Olympic athletes every couple of weeks. It has not happened by accident because there are certain principles and fundamentals he has followed in order to build such a network.

1. Find People With the Right Attitude

“I fundamentally will not allow my network to be exposed to people who are negative and have the potential to bring them down.”

– Jon Levy

What Jon is clear on is not only who he wants to spend time with, but also who he doesn’t want to. This can be an area we can easily compromise on! However, he recognises that bringing together positive people will create a positive experience for everyone and has created strategies to turn his vision into reality.

2. Add Value to Your Connections

“If you’re a giver, then you build quality relationships, and with those relationships you’re exposed to opportunity over the long term”

– Adam Grant

Jon has taken the time to understand the people who he wants to be part of his network – successful and busy individuals with a limited amount of time. He uses a fundamental principle of legends and looks to add value and create a space where these people can be themselves rather than simply talk about business. He knows that this will create opportunities for him because of aligning himself with the law of giving and receiving.

3. Develop Emotional Intelligence

“One of the fundamental mistakes I made at the beginning was thinking that people enjoyed all the things I liked.”

– Jon Levy

Jon actively looks to build a diverse network and has come to learn that people are different in their interests and behaviours. The more we understand people (including ourselves!) through developing our emotional intelligence, the more we are able to make everyone in our company feel comfortable and at ease. His ability to do this has increased because of his willingness to make mistakes and learn from them. These 3 fundamentals are at the heart of how you can benefit from the Legends Network which you can register for here…
